Base64 Encoder/Decoder
Encode and decode Base64 instantly — full Unicode support, with an optional URL-safe alphabet.
Encoded/decoded locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Uses '-'/'_' with no padding.
About this tool
Paste or upload text to Base64-encode it, or paste Base64 to decode it back to text. Switch direction with the mode selector or the swap button, and toggle the URL-safe alphabet if the result needs to be embedded in a URL, filename, or cookie value.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this handle Unicode text, or only ASCII?
- Full Unicode. Text is encoded to UTF-8 bytes before Base64 encoding, so accented letters, emoji, and any other script round-trip correctly — not just ASCII characters.
- Is my text sent to your servers?
- No. Encoding and decoding both happen in your browser using the Web Crypto-adjacent TextEncoder/TextDecoder APIs. Nothing you paste, upload, or generate here is sent to WebCodeIn's servers, logged, or stored.
- What's the difference between standard and URL-safe Base64?
- Standard Base64 (RFC 4648 §4) uses '+' and '/', which have special meaning in URLs and file paths. URL-safe Base64 (RFC 4648 §5) replaces them with '-' and '_' and drops the trailing '=' padding, so the result can be used directly in a URL, filename, or cookie value without extra escaping.
- Do I need to pick the right alphabet before decoding?
- No — decoding accepts either alphabet automatically, since the standard and URL-safe character sets never overlap. The URL-safe toggle only affects the encoder's output.
Privacy
Every encode and decode operation runs in your browser using native Web APIs. No text, request, or generated value is sent to WebCodeIn’s servers, logged, or stored.
