Frequently asked questions
- What OCR engine does this use?
- Tesseract.js, an open-source OCR engine that runs entirely in the browser using WebAssembly and machine learning — the same technology used across many client-side OCR tools.
- Does it work on handwriting?
- No — handwritten text is not reliably supported. This works best on printed text (documents, screenshots, signs, book pages).
- What languages are supported?
- English only, currently. Support for additional languages is a possible future addition.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No — your image and the text extracted from it never leave your browser. Separately, the first time you use this tool, your browser downloads the OCR engine itself (a few megabytes of code and model data) from a content delivery network, the same way a web font or app icon would load — that's the tool's own code loading, not your content being uploaded. It's cached afterward, so repeat use is faster.
