About this tool
Switch between Image to ASCII (upload a picture, pick a character set) and Text to ASCII (type text, pick a font style) — both render live, right in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- How does Image to ASCII work?
- Your image is sampled into a grid of characters, and each cell's brightness picks a character from the selected character set — darker areas use denser characters, lighter areas use sparser ones.
- What's the difference between the character sets?
- Standard and Minimal use a short, high-contrast set of characters. Detailed uses a 70-character ramp for finer gradations of brightness, at the cost of a busier-looking result.
- How does Text to ASCII work?
- Your text is rendered with real font styling (weight, italics, size, spacing, and an optional drop shadow depending on the font you pick), then run through the same brightness-to-character sampling as Image mode. This gives full support for any character your browser can render, rather than a fixed, hand-built glyph table that would only cover a handful of characters.
- Is my image or text uploaded anywhere?
- No. Both modes run entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — nothing is ever sent to a server.
